What the heck, Ma!?

419 words; about a 2 minute read

Alena sighed as she settled on the call with her mother on the call. "Dearest", Catarina, worry etched on her face. "What is wrong?". Alena braced herself, aware that she might not get the whole truth.

"After the latest assignment, we ran into... some trouble. I remember facts from some of Mrs. Anderson's books at that point. Ma. Who is Mrs. Anderson?. Why does more and more things, small items, notes, letters, appear at my doorstep? What is going on?", she asked her mother.

Catarina sighed. Alena looked more closely at her mother. She seemed reluctant to share whatever info there was.

"Your father didn't leave upon learning about me expecting you. In fact, he stayed all up to the time where i gave birth. He gave you your name. Said it mean "little angel" in his native language", Catarina said with a sigh.

"Mrs. Anderson?", Alena asked. "Your father had a lot of connections on Earth, i don't know the extent, but he managed to get Mrs. Anderson to take us away from Brazil. Being there would be risky, as your father seemed to have some enemies who would want us taken for leverage against him", she said, the look in her mother's eyes gave away the woman's lack of energy.

"I'm sorry for keeping this from you. Mrs. Anderson and I were about to tell you all this, but then Mrs. Anderson was found dead. So i had to delay it. But i never got the chance to say it. Especially with our neighborhood being rather hostile towards us", Catarina said, regret in her voice.

"You did what you could in that place. I've been so proud of you for going for something bigger that the toxic neighborhood you were raised in. I know that if your father was here, he would be beaming with pride", Catarina went on. "I'm just glad we could talk this out. Talk to you soon, Ma", Alena said, needing the time to process everything she had learned. "We'll talk another time, dear", with that, they ended the call.

Alena stood and stretched. All these bombshells had made her realize that there were so many things that she didn't know about lineage. She needed someone to talk to. Time to go see if anyone in the command staff had any ideas. She felt sort of desperate to know what the hell happened to her father. Time to get to work
